Scaffolding: Essential Structures for Safe Work at Height

What Is Scaffolding?

Scaffolding, also known as scaffold or staging, is a temporary structure used to support work crews and materials during the construction, maintenance, or repair of buildings, bridges, and other man-made structures. Its primary purpose is to provide a safe and stable platform for workers to perform tasks at height or in locations that are otherwise difficult to access.

Types of scaffolding

Scaffolding comes in various types, primarily categorized as supported and suspended. Supported scaffolds use rigid structures like poles, legs, or frames for support, while suspended scaffolds rely on ropes or other non-rigid overhead support. Common types include frame, tube and clamp, system (Kwikstage, Ringlock, Cuplock), mast climbing, and various specialty scaffolds like trestle, cantilever, and swing stage scaffolding.

Uses of Scaffolding

Scaffolding is essential for a wide range of activities, including:

Construction of buildings, bridges, and infrastructure

Cleaning and maintenance of high-rise structures

Industrial inspections and non-destructive testing

Art installations, concert stages, and exhibition stands

Temporary seating, observation towers, and ski ramps

Cultural events and festivals, especially in regions where bamboo scaffolding is traditional
